A university that makes use of high technology in teaching its students is bound to charge a high tuition. Such is the case with the California Institute of Technology, popularly known as CalTech. The tuition, along with other school-related expenses, rack up to more than $48,000 a year. The tuition alone is already at more than $34,000 a year. It is then no surprise that many CalTech students and prospective students are seeking financial aid. There are different types out there. One of the common ones is a student loan.

Student loans are discouraged in several American universities. This is because the interest rates can further weigh down the debt. Instead of enjoying the fruits of their academic labor, students have no choice but to pay off bills for years after graduation. Still, scholarships and grants can sometimes be hard to come by. There are many scholarships and grants. However, there are more students vying for them. Some of these scholarships and grants cannot even finance all of the expenses at CalTech. Some students with scholarships or grants may still need to loan some of the money.
Federal loans
If you do decide to apply for a loan, you should first consider loans sponsored by the university, the state or the federal government. These loans have significantly lower interest rates than those offered by private institutions. Federal loans that you can consider include Perkins Loans, Stafford Loans and Direct Plus Loans. Stafford loans have low, fixed interest rates of 4.5%. The subsidized Stafford loan is much easier to handle as the government is responsible for the interest gained. Getting the subsidized loan will depend on your FAFSA results and financial need.
What is the FAFSA? The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Loan. This is the form that you have to fill out when applying for a student loan. Just make sure you submit it at the deadline set by California Institute of Technology.
